Addiction Treatment Curbs Crystal Methamphetamine Abuse Among Gay and Bisexual Men
Addiction Treatment Curbs Crystal Methamphetamine Abuse Among Gay and Bisexual Men
Behavioral therapy can help gay and bisexual men (GBM) reduce crystal methamphetamine abuse and risky sexual behaviors and sustain these gains for 1 year, NIDA-funded researchers report. By the end of a 16-week trial of four different behavioral therapies, study participants’ stimulant-positive urine samples fell 31 percent, and their number of past-month sexual partners fell more than 50 percent—outcomes that regressed little at the followup visits. Symptoms of depression also improved.
Dr. Steven Shoptaw and colleagues at the University of California, Los Angeles and the Friends Research Institute recruited 263 crystal methamphetamine-addicted Gay and Bisexual Men throughout Los Angeles County, particularly in Hollywood, where HIV prevalence is especially high. Of these, 162 completed the requirements for entering the addiction treatment phase of the study, which were to attend six assessments and participate in at least two of four group sessions on abstinence skills during a 2-week “baseline period.” Men who met the requirements reported less severity and shorter duration of methamphetamine abuse than those who did not, despite having abused methamphetamine for 5 years and having spent $293 on the drug in the past month, on average. Half had engaged in unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) with someone other than their primary partner in the past month, and 84 percent of these men linked the behavior to methamphetamine abuse. Most participants (73 percent) reported symptoms of depression, with about 30 percent describing these as moderate to severe.

Drug detox and alcohol detox is the first step on the road to recovery Drug detox and alcohol detox refers to the period during which all traces of the drug are being removed from the body. There are medications to facilitate drug detox and alcohol detox; some of which ease the physical pain and discomfort of alcohol withdrawal and drug withdrawal .
This crucial stage of drug detox and alcohol detox is vital to a complete recovery but should not be taken lightly or without the help of an addiction treatment professional. The withdrawals from some of the more dangerous drugs can be just as, if not more, physically dangerous than the use of the drug itself. Opiate withdrawal is one of the most serious drug detox processes and should be monitored closely by an addiction treatment professional to ensure success and to minimize potential side effects. Some of the side effects associated with certain drug detox periods are tremors, vomiting, severe body pain and breaks in psychological functioning. However uncomfortable some types of drug detox and alcohol detox may be, it is necessary to first rid the body of the substance it depends on so it may return to a state of functioning without it. It is only when a client’s mind and body are clear of the substance from drug detox that the psychological aspects of recovery can begin.
Drug detox and alcohol programs can be found in drug rehab programs, alcohol rehab programs, addiction treatment centers, local hospital and even in some jails or prisons. Law enforcement officials are now more educated about the dangers of drug detox and some offer medical care during the process to newly booked offenders. Although a very scary and daunting thought to drug dependent individuals, drug detox and alcohol detox is the first vital step in returning to a healthy lifestyle.

Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
Gay alcohol abuse and gay drug addiction is a problem for far too many gay Americans. Whether it is inherited or society related, drug addiction and gay alcohol addiction cause tremendous damage to those people that come in contact with the drug addict or alcoholic. Fortunately, there are gay alcohol rehab programs and drug rehab centers across the country that assist addicts, alcoholics and their families with the process of alcoholism treatment and drug addiction treatment.
Different Gay Alcohol Rehab Approaches
Different gay alcohol rehabs and drug rehab programs take different approaches, but the philosophy is usually the same – if you are suffering from alcohol abuse and can not manage to control your drinking, you are probably alcoholic.
Most quality alcohol rehab programs use medications to help the alcoholic and addict manage their alcohol withdrawal or drug withdrawal. Alcohol detox generally takes between five and seven days, depending on how much alcohol you were drinking, how frequent and a variety of other factors. Alcohol detox should take place in a medically monitored alcohol detox unit, within the alcohol rehab program.
Alcohol Abuse Treatment
lcohol abuse or alcohol dependence is a treatable illness, but successful alcohol treatment requires the active participation of the employee, a professional alcohol counselor, the employee’s supervisor, and family members or friends. Alcohol treatment may involve one to four weeks of intense alcohol rehab at an outpatient alcohol treatment program or inpatient alcohol rehab facility following by six to twelve months of “aftercare” consisting of periodic individual, group, or family counseling. The recovery process typically requires the employee’s regular participation in a community-based self-help group such as Alcoholics Anonymous.
One key to successful alcohol treatment is admission of the problem and motivation to beat it. Studies of U.S. military alcohol treatment programs show that completion of the full aftercare program is the strongest predictor of alcohol treatment success.
Relapse is a common occurrence after all addiction treatment or alcohol treatment, but the risk of relapse diminishes with the passage of time and continued abstinence. The first relapse occurs most commonly during the first three months after completion of alcohol treatment. One study of alcohol treatment program outcomes for military personnel found that if one gets through the first three months without relapse, the chances for long-term abstinence improve dramatically, and the chance of a relapse that affects work performance is small.
Remission of drinking problems without treatment is common as young drinkers mature and the lifestyle, stress, or other circumstances that prompted the drinking change. The likelihood of spontaneous remission without alcohol treatment is relatively high among young men in their 20s, but relatively low among men in their 40s or older.

Alcohol detox is necessary and alcohol detox is difficult. Alcohol detox is a process that in order for the alcoholic to get sober, they must undertake it. Alcohol detox can be uncomfortable. Lakeview understands that alcohol detox is this way. We have a program setup up to assist any alcoholic with their alcohol detox. This way we can make it as comfortable as possible.
Alcohol detox must be done within the walls of a medical facility. The reason for this is that detoxing from alcohol can be fatal. Alcohol has been in the system of the alcoholic for so long that when it is taken out, the body reacts violently. This reaction can be fatal. The body will convulse and become nauseous. This can all be very uncomfortable. The best thing to do is to perform alcohol detox within an addiction treatment facility.
There are many different aspects to alcohol detox. The first is the medical aspect. We have a medical doctor on staff in order to assist the alcoholic through the alcohol detox process. This ensures the safety of the patient. We find that if we can set the patients mind at ease the alcohol detox process goes much more smoothly.
The second aspect of alcohol detox is physical. We have an in-house nutritionist at Lakeview. This nutritionist will put the patient on the right meal plan in order for their body to perform the best that it can during the alcohol detox process. If the body is being fed well the rest of the detox is much more comfortable.
The third aspect of alcohol detox is the emotional aspect. Our highly trained team of counselors assist the patient in the area of emotions. Alcohol detox can be an extremely emotional time. Our staff is there to help the patient move forward through their emotions. We feel that one of the biggest reasons alcoholics drink is because they experience emotions that they can’t handle. If we can be there for them it sets their emotional being at rest. This allows us to begin the healing process of alcohol treatment.
All of these aspects of alcohol detox are just as important as the others. We find that to place emphasis on one and not the other throws off the balance of an intricate process such as alcohol detox. The balance that Lakeview aims for is an achievable balance. We have been able to achieve and maintain this balance for years.

Immediate Goals of Detox
The immediate goal of detox is to provide a safe withdrawal from the drug addiction and alcohol abuse and enable the patient to become drug free. Many risks are associated with withdrawal, some influenced by the setting. For persons who are severely dependent on alcohol, abrupt, unsupervised cessation of drinking may result in delirium tremens or death. Other sedative-hypnotics may produce life-threatening withdrawal syndromes. Withdrawal from opioids produces severe discomfort, but is not generally life threatening. However, risks to the patient and society are not limited to the severity of the patient’s physical disturbance, particularly when the detox is conducted in an outpatient addiction treatment setting. Outpatients experiencing withdrawal symptoms may self-medicate with street drugs. The resulting interaction between prescribed medication and street drugs may result in an overdose. Less severe side effects include sedation or a drop in blood pressure.
To provide withdrawal that is humane and protects the patient’s dignity. A caring staff, a supportive environment, sensitivity to cultural issues, confidentiality, and the selection of appropriate detox medication (if needed) are all important to providing humane withdrawal.

Because detox often entails a more intensive level of addiction treatment than other types of addiction treatment, there is a practical value in defining a period during which a person is “in detox.” There is no simple way to do this. Usually, the detox period is defined as the period during which the patient receives detoxi medications.
Another way of defining the detox period is by measuring the duration of withdrawal signs or symptoms. However, the duration of these symptoms may be difficult to determine in a correctly medicated patient because symptoms of withdrawal are largely suppressed by the medication.

Alcoholism is a serious disease and the problem is growing. The National Council On Alcoholism And Drug Dependence statistics reveal that approximately 18 million Americans abuse alcohol. Each year more than 100,000 Americans die from alcohol related deaths and alcohol abuse is a factor in nearly half of all traffic fatalities. Over half of the men and women in the United States report that one or more of their family members have an alcohol abuse problem.
According to the National Institute On Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism, alcoholism is a disease that has four main components:
. Craving-an overwhelming need to drink
. Loss of Control-An inability to put the drink down
. Physical Dependence-After a period of heavy drinking withdrawal symptoms occur
such as nausea, shaking, and anxiety
. Tolerance-Needing greater amounts of alcohol to obtain a “high”
