Short-term inpatient drug addiction and alcohol rehab programs keep patients up to 30 days in a drug rehab or alcohol treatment center. Most of these addiction treatment programs focus on medical stabilization, abstinence, and lifestyle changes. Staff members are primarily medical professionals and counselors trained in the treatment of drug addiction and alcohol addiction.

Short-Term Residential drug rehab and alcohol rehabs provide intensive but relatively brief residential addiction treatment based on a modified 12-step approach, talk and group therapy. Once primarily for alcohol abuse treatment, these programs expanded into drug abuse treatment in the 1980s. Alcohol Abuse in Texas

National statistics show that Texas leads the country in DWIs and has the highest number of alcohol-related crashes. Because of its high DWI rate, Texas was among 14 states that received federal funding for a Labor Day drunken-driving awareness campaign, the San Antonio Express-News reported Aug. 24.

“If we catch you, I guarantee, you’re going to jail,” said Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Travis Hall. “If you’re going to drink, just don’t drive.”

Law-enforcement officials released the figures to coincide with the kickoff of the nationwide campaign called “Drink, Drive, Go to Jail.” The effort is designed to reduce the number of drunk-driving fatalities and injuries that occur during the Labor Day weekend.

The crackdown will include 60,000 additional officers on the road nationally and an aggressive media campaign to discourage people from driving after drinking.

Alcohol Abuse Treatment

lcohol abuse or alcohol dependence is a treatable illness, but successful alcohol treatment requires the active participation of the employee, a professional alcohol counselor, the employee’s supervisor, and family members or friends. Alcohol treatment may involve one to four weeks of intense alcohol rehab at an outpatient alcohol treatment program or inpatient alcohol rehab facility following by six to twelve months of “aftercare” consisting of periodic individual, group, or family counseling. The recovery process typically requires the employee’s regular participation in a community-based self-help group such as Alcoholics Anonymous.

One key to successful alcohol treatment is admission of the problem and motivation to beat it. Studies of U.S. military alcohol treatment programs show that completion of the full aftercare program is the strongest predictor of alcohol treatment success.

Relapse is a common occurrence after all addiction treatment or alcohol treatment, but the risk of relapse diminishes with the passage of time and continued abstinence. The first relapse occurs most commonly during the first three months after completion of alcohol treatment. One study of alcohol treatment program outcomes for military personnel found that if one gets through the first three months without relapse, the chances for long-term abstinence improve dramatically, and the chance of a relapse that affects work performance is small.

Remission of drinking problems without treatment is common as young drinkers mature and the lifestyle, stress, or other circumstances that prompted the drinking change. The likelihood of spontaneous remission without alcohol treatment is relatively high among young men in their 20s, but relatively low among men in their 40s or older.

Most drug rehab services, including alcohol treatment programs, are geared towards serving a white, heterosexual, male, clientel. Unless great effort has been put into awareness training, developing knowledge about the experiences and circumstances of minority groups, and the establishment of programmes to deal with the special needs of different groups of oppressed people, services will simply perpetuate institutional discrimination. U.S. researchers Lohrenz et al (1978) found that 37% of homosexuals experienced discrimination from alcohol treatment program staff while Fifield, De Crescenzo & Latham (1975) discovered that 75% of homosexuals who are recovering from alcoholism believe that mainstream drug rehab and alcohol rehab program are not geared to treating homosexuals and do not provide an accepting and supportive environment.

Because of discrimination homosexuals are less likely to attend alcohol treatment program and drug addiction treatment programs unless, that is, they are ‘passing.’ In this case, if the worker does not bring up the subject, one of the major causes of their problems will be ignored. Rofes (1989) says:

By ignoring the special problems that a lesbian alcoholic, for example, presents, an alcohol treatment program will be doing a service to no one. Their alcoholism treatment of the individual will be less than adequate and may tend to intensify the woman’s feelings of isolation and ‘difference.’ Only by bringing the issue into the open and addressing the woman’s lesbianism as an aspect of her life which she needs to feel positively about, will the program be truly effective.
